Sickness absence review
March 3rd 2011
An independent review of sickness absence is to be included in the government’s welfare reforms.
The review, which will look at ways of cutting the costs of sickness, will be headed by Dame Carol Black, National Director for Health and Work, and David Frost, the Director General of the British Chamber of Commerce. The review panel will also include business experts, and trade union and health sector representatives. The findings will be reported later in 2011.
The review’s main objectives are to:
- Examine sickness absence trends.
- Investigate how the current system can be changed.
- Look at whether the costs of sickness are appropriately shared between individuals, employers and the state.
The findings will also contribute towards the government’s employment law review, which aims to cut red tape and encourage a more dynamic labour market.
The manufacturers’ organisation EEF, reveals in a recent survey that much time is wasted waiting for tests, surgery and other treatments. It says larger organisations have access to occupation health and other support which is not available to SMEs. The EEF has called for the review to ensure NHS reforms do not slow down access to medical treatment, and GPs are encouraged to take work needs into account when issuing fit notes.
